Dialysis Catheter Insertion
Dialysis Catheter Insertion “access” is a way for the blood to leave and return to your body during hemdialysis. There are 3 different types of access:
- AV fistula – this is the preferred way. For this you will need a surgery to connect an artery directly to a vein. An AV fistula generally needs 2-3 months after creation to mature before it can be used for dialysis
- AV graft- to make this access the surgeon generally places a tube like structure to connect an artery to a vein.
- Central venous catheter – This is the mode to start dialysis if it has to be done urgently or if AV fistula or graft creation is not possible.
They are of two types
- Temporary non-tunneled catheter
- Permanent tunneled catheter
Dialysis catheter insertions require expertise. Our doctor, Dr. Satarupa Deb has the vast experience of inserting over 200 temporary and over 100 permanent tunneled catheters independently.
